To obtain a saddle made to fit your horse the following items are required:
A metal coat hanger or a flexi curve (available on our web site £8.00)
- Stand the horse on a flat, level surface as squarely as possible.
- Keep the flexi curve or metal coat hanger in one piece(don''t take it apart)
- Carefully place on the horses back just behind the withers. The sides of the curve should be just behind the shoulder blades (scapular bones) pointing down behind the elbows.
- Mould the curve over the wither and get the exact shape of the withers and sides of the shoulders.
- Before removing the flexi curve check that you have measured in the same position on the left and right sides.
- Carefully remove the flexi curve noting which is the left and right side of the horse.
- On a piece of A4 paper draw around the curve following the edge that contacted the horse. Put on your name address, contact number with type and style of saddle you are looking for and fax it to us on 01995 670332, email it to email@example.com or send it to us in the post.
We now use infared thermal imaging to fit saddles to locate problems.
Thermography can quickly and accurately show where the saddle, pressure pad, numnah etc. is in greatest contact with your horse’s back, and where it may be exerting uneven pressure. The process is two-fold. Firstly an image of the underneath of the saddle is taken prior to exercise, after your horse has been wearing it for a short while. A second image is taken after you have ridden in the saddle. Both images are expertly reviewed to provide valuable information as to the fit.
Problems such as bridging, saddles which are too wide or narrow, even lumpy flocking can all be picked up with Infrared imaging. If your saddle was poorly fitted, we strongly recommend that you have your horse's back thermal imaged too. When coupled with an image of the horse’s back, you have a true view on whether your tack could be leading to or exacerbating problems, or indeed whether your riding style might.
Without knowing, many of us are ‘one sided’, sitting more heavily to either the right or left rather than evenly spreading our weight, or sitting in front or behind the movement. This can affect your horse’s way of going, and is often very subtle, going unnoticed. The first image is a well fitting saddle.
All Fylde saddles are adjustable to fit different shapes and can be adjusted to fit different ponies. Our saddles are mainly made on a wide Tree and then adusted to a medium/wide or an exra wide depending on what you order at the time but we prefer to fit them from a template as this gives us a better indication of the fit needed. However please do not order a saddle from D to D measurement as this is imposible to measure as every saddle is different and depending on the amount of flocking the saddle has will alter the fit even if it has the same D to D measurment. Adjusting the saddle does not de value a saddle in any way but increases the vaue as they can be adjusted to fit your next pony or if sold can be adjusted to fit the new pony depending it is the right type of saddle for that breed of horse.
